Saturday Outing

It was 35 degrees out this morning. I thought I would go fill up the bird feeder. I am  having some issues with the squirrels climbing up the Shepherd’s Hook. I have sprayed it but they can still climb. Any of you have ideas on how to keep them from climbing to get the bird seed?

I was going to go get Al today at noon to take him out to eat. Before I did this I took some photos of my friendly and ornery little squirrels I feed.

I took Al to eat at KFC.  He ate real well. When we first took off for our trip I was still pleased at how well he was pushing his walker. He did really well so I asked him as we were finishing our meal if he wanted to go anywhere else.

Of course he mentioned the little store that he usually can find his coca cola items in. So we took off for there. Once inside the store I saw him slowing down but he was still moving right along. He made a quick scan of the store and then stopped in front of his collection of coke.

He looked and looked and I watched his knees buckle more and more. I was beginning to become alarmed as he was getting closer to the floor. He didn’t see anything new and I knew he was disappointed. He had me push him to a couch and he rested while I took another quick glance. I found an Eastlake chair. It matches my Eastlake rocker I bought in the fall. I was excited to be able to afford it and when Al saw me carrying it up front he grinned.

I recognized that grin. He was happy that I found something but I was sad that he didn’t. There was one more store in town that I knew he may get lucky in so I asked him if he wanted to go.

He said no thanks. I am tired. I was a little saddened but it was more for the fact that he was going back to the facility empty-handed. I got him back in the car. I did notice his legs didn’t want to move near as well.

Although he can walk he can’t walk long. I could see his body is weak and tires easily. When we got back to the facility he could not even stand to get out of the car. I helped him and got him through the doors. We headed straight to his room. He had me help him get his shoes off and he laid down. I asked,”Do you want your TV on?” He said softly,”No I need to rest and take a nap.”

I felt a little guilty. Maybe I had pushed too hard. The eating out was probably the most we should have done. Seeing him walk around his room yesterday fooled me a little or maybe I got my hopes up too much for him. I will be more cautious the next time.

I am glad he and I got to go out though. We enjoyed our chicken strips and coleslaw. He ate my french fries and his own macaroni and cheese. He shouldn’t be hungry for a while. I will always treasure these moments we go out together. We never know how long they will continue do we?

  1. I love the squirrels! But I can see why they’d be a nuisance to the bird feed. 😦 I am glad you got to go out with Al today. I am sure he enjoyed it very much. He wants you to be happy just as much as you want him to be happy so I am positively sure he was glad you’d found something you wanted. Maybe you could buy him a gift next time you both go out so then he has something to take back to the facility with him 🙂

    • I did in fact buy him something and take it to him yesterday. One of the new edition cars he collects. He just grinned from ear to ear. I think he had a good time today. I guess when I saw him walking yesterday I thought he had more strength than he actually did, but we still had a good time together

  2. So happy for you both, the memories you are making are precious ones. sounds as if Al got a tummy full and as you said became tired and weak. but what fun he had getting away from the facility and spending time with you. As for your squirrels I think mine and yours are cousins they look so much alike. Don’t know how to keep them out of bird feeder I believe as long as you are feeding birds and squirrels you will have this dilema. 🙂

  3. It’s good for him to walk as long as you take precautions. A cane is mandatory and a gait belt is good. I use to take the chair just in case. But I’m glad Al had a big day. That should make you feel good!:)

  4. Wonderful to read about your day .. with Al and that you still are able to spend time outside the carehome too. Great that you took your little camera with you and share with us. Do you have any date for when Al is moving back home again. Thanks for a nice post .. about love and care.

    • Hi my friend! Thanks for the great comment. It was nice to be able to take him out again. It has been a while since he wanted to go. The pain patch is helping. I still don’t know when he is coming. I haven’t received word yet. They are figuring out his level of care he will need

  5. Reblogged this on Looking Up and commented:
I live in the desert and the ground squirrels are always stealing bird seed from the feeders. I cut off some ocotillo cactus branches and wired them to the pole so that the thorns were pointing up. It only took one time for the squirrel to get the point, no pun intended.

  6. Good to hear about your day. I love the pictures. I took a picture of a squirrel in one of our parks that is just about identical to the one heading down the tree. Only the one I caught had almost no tail. Wonder what happened to him? We have a mail order gift company in Canada and they sell something called Squirrel Chasers in a set of 3. They are cloth bags containing natural ingredients which create a scent that repels the squirrels from bird feeders. You just tie a pouch to the area you wish to protect. You may want to see if you can find something similar in your area. It looks as if the name on it is Old Doc’s, but I’m not sure as the pouch in the picture is folded a bit just where the writing is. They are $12.98 for the set.

    • that sounds very interesting. My neighbor told me last evening that she had the same problem. She went to the home stores and bought a piece of PC tubing and had it cut straight down the middle. It was then put around the post the bird feeder was on. The squirrels could not climb the very smooth tubing. So nice to see you!

  7. Aww, the birds and the squirrels are so enjoyable. I’m so happy you and Al had a lovely day, Terry. Happy Palm Sunday, Terry. I just came from your music site watching Jesus’ resurraction and I’m still sitting with tears in my eyes. This was so heart touching.

  8. Sounds like you had another nice day together. From your descriptions, it sounds as if Al is appreciating what you do for him and enjoying the time spent together. May the Lord continue to bless you both and allow you to spend much more quality time together. Praying for him to come home soon!
