Today is July 4th, Independence Day in the United States. How many other countries celebrate along with us?
London.
Germany.
Italy.
Denmark.
Portugal.
Just to name some… Most of the European countries celebrate July forth in some way…
How many countries do not celebrate on the day we do; or not at all?
In many countries, Independence Day is a national holiday, just like it is in the United States, celebrated with much vigor. Here are some of the Independence Days of other countries, by order of date:
· Mexico – September 16th, 1810, Mexico declared independence from Spain.
· Argentina – July 9, 1816… independence from Spain.
· Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua – September 15, 1821. All of these countries share the same Independence Day, the day they achieved independence from Spain or Mexico.
· Dominican Republic – February 27, 1844… independence from Haiti.
· Bulgaria – September 22, 1908… independence from the Ottoman Empire.
· Iceland – June 17, 1944… independence from Denmark.
· South Korea – August 15, 1945. This Independence Day, also known as Gwangbokjeol, celebrates
South Korea’s independence from Japan. It also marks the creation of South Korea’s government in 1948, on the same day.
· Belarus – June 3, 1966. This day marks the liberation of Minsk (the capital of Belarus) from Nazi Germany.
· Russia – June 12, 1990. This Russian Independence Day is also known as Russia Day. It was on this date that the Russian parliament formally declared its sovereignty. This is one of the newest Independence Days celebrated by any countries.
· Armenia – September 21, 1991… independence from the Soviet Union.
· Bosnia and Herzegovina – March 1, 1992. This Independence Day celebrates their independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugolsavia.
· Montenegro – June 3, 2006. This recent Independence Day marks Montenegro’s independence from Serbia. They voted to secede on May 21, 2006.
Many countries have Independence Days to celebrate their independence from the United Kingdom, just like we do. Here are just a few of those countries and the dates of their Independence Days… notice how recent some of them are:
· Australia – January 1, 1901
· Afghanistan – August 19, 1919
· Jordan – May 25, 1946
· India – August 15, 1947
· Sri Lanka – February 4, 1948
· Malaysia – August 31, 1957
· The Republic of Cyprus – October 1, 1960
· Jamaica – August 6, 1962

· Malta – September 21, 1964
· Guyana – May 26, 1966
· Swaziland – September 6, 1968
· Tonga – June 4, 1970
· Bahamas – July 10, 1973
· Zimbabwe – April 18, 1980

I wish you Terry, and your country,a happy day,
Great Britain doesn’t have a celebrate the ‘4th of July’ day. It could be that some of the ex USA folks who are now living in the UK possibly still celebrate, but it passes us by as just another day ~ in the same way as 5th November passes the USA by.
I would guess that the majority of the USA don’t know about the 5th November – or Guy Fawkes Night, aka: Bonfire Night. Without being disrespectful: Guy Fawkes / 5th November means nothing to you there in the USA, it’s just the 4th November! – And in the same way the 4th of July kind of passes us by too. We know about it and know that you celebrate the day as a holiday day, but it’s nothing special to us as a nation. Again … please know, I’m not being disrespectful – I’m just trying to explain.
I can’t speak for any other of the countries you mention, but I found this on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_independence_days — which might be of help. (however, please know that Wiki isn’t written by experts – so if something you find there is important to you in some way – check, and double check the information then cross reference it so that you don’t quote something which isn’t perhaps quite the right information.
But … one thing did jump out of your post – regarding Australia . . .
Australia as a nation became independent at some unknown date after 1931. By 1931 it had the power to exercise independence but chose not to do so for some time. The constitutional links between Australia and Britain were finally boken by legislation passed by the State, Commonwealth and British Parliament on 3rd March 1986, and the Australia Acts came into force. The British Government is no longer responsible for the government of any state in Australia and the Westminster parliament no longer legislates for Australia.
So in actual fact it was March 3 1986, and not January 1901, which was the day Australia achieved complete independence from Britain. But …. I believe that Australia Day (formerly known as the Foundation day) is the official national day of Australia and celebrated annually on 26th January, (In recent times Australians are recognizing the significance of Australia Day for the indigenous or the Aboriginals of Australia).
I wish you ~ many happy Independence Days to come, Terry!
