The Dangers of Splenda

Claim:   The artificial sweetener Splenda was inadequately tested and is unsafe for human consumption.

I saw this notice about Splenda and I am wondering if it is true.

FALSE

Before you reach for a packet of Splenda (sucralose), think twice.

Don’t be fooled by its slogan “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar.”

Sucralose was approved for use in foods as a sweetener in 1998. Before approving sucralose, the FDA claimed to have reviewed 110 human and animal studies, but it turns out that only 2 out of those studies were actually on humans.

“It is a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, and with detrimental health effects to match,” explains Dr. Joseph Mercola.

Let’s look as some of the potential health risks associated to Splenda. Reported symptoms: Seizures, Dizziness, Migraines, Allergic reactions, Weight gain and increases in blood sugar, Blurred vision, Gastrointestinal issues.

The reason it is so important to know about the effects of sucralose is because it is the number one selling artificial sweetener in America today. Most of the controversy surrounding Splenda is the way it is advertised. “The sugar industry is currently suing McNeil Nutritionals for implying that Splenda is a natural form of sugar with no calories,” Mercola adds.

What is sucralose really?

The truth is that sucralose does start off as sugar, but it is what happens after that is the problem. In the factory, three chlorine molecules are added to the sugar molecule to make sucralose. This alters the chemical structure of the sugar, making it a molecule that does not exist in nature. Because it doesn’t exist in nature, the body does not metabolize or digest this molecule. If our bodies were able to metabolize it, then sucralose would no longer have zero calories.

    • Are you kidding me? Wow. My dad learned he was a diabetic in his later yeara. 10 years later he died from Leukemia. He used a lot of sweetners and ate a lot of sugar free foods. I’m always struggling to lose weight. I drink diet sprite and use sweetners in my oatmeal

      • Also I learned that just because it says no sugar that doesn’t always mean no sugar it’s just there isn’t enough to say to count sugar added. however some pops are ok to have once in awhile, as always monitor the intake of all foods no matter what.

  2. This is why we all have to check out the ingredients of all the products we either use, or eat. I haven’t eaten any processed food for a year now. I’m hoping the the effects of eating processed foods will be leaving my body and I will be more healthy. If you use make-up, etc. check out those ingredients also. Many of them cause cancer. Keep yourself as healthy as you can!

  3. My doctor told me the same things…since I do not use sugar all that much and have cut back quite a bit (also diabetic) I use regular sugar. I heard good things about stevia but I cannot afford it. Actually by going to back to regular sugar in my tea there is no difference in my blood sugar.

      • If I crave a cookie (a weakness) then I do not put sugar at all in my tea. Been slacking on that so need to get my act together. Christmas is always a challenge and it takes me a few weeks to get back on track…this year because of the nasty winter my tea and cookies were much needed comfort food but now I am paying the piper! 🙂

      • I always have to work at my eating and I have to accept there’s going to be days I cheat. After 33 years of being diabetic it gets old. Hugs

  4. My grandmother, Lord rest her soul, use to say she was going to eat like she’s always eaten in life and not worry about all the sugar free and diet stuff because it was no good. I didn’t believe her because I felt she said those things because she was overweight. But she said she had been over weight all her life and it was the life God gave her, so “no worries”.
On another note, I think I read somewhere or was told that all of these sugar-free, sweeteners, no caffeine things contain formaldehyde, so I totally stay away from them. I really never saw the sense in not using plain sugar, when these items derive from sugar. 😛

    • I barely use artificial sweetners because of what you stated. I try to just eat the sweet if I am going to cheat. I don’t buy sugar free cookies or pies either. Your grandmother was a smart lady
