THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

It came upon a midnight clear

Dad was drinking his usual beer

Mamma and I were far from cheer

Peeling onions and wiping tears.
Finishing up  prep for next day meal

Feel like we got screwed in all this deal

Placing pies on the window sill

Dad sneaking over and trying to steal.
Christmas wrapping not quite taped

Lights are flickering, bill is late

Wish I’d considered another date

This is the night; I’ve learned to hate.
Turned the lights off, went to bed

Dad all drunk and looking dead

Wonder if Santa will turn into Feds

Keeping presents and shaking head.
Christmas isn’t to be this way

Supposed to be a grand ole day

Help me make it; watch what I say

In this I pray; in your holy name.
Written from my heart,

Terry Shepherd
