School Days, School Days

Remember this song? Well, at least the lyrics?

School days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, “I love you, Joe”
When we were a couple of kidsSchool days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, “I love you, Joe”

Here in Indiana, school began for many this week. Some of my grandchildren began today. The city I live in, kids begin this coming Friday.

Geesh, to me this is way too early! I believe kids need a brain and schedule break. They spend most of their youth in school, and they do deserve fun and relaxation.

I started school the Tuesday after Labor Day, or right after the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

And we got out of school the weekend of Memorial weekend. I can brag a little on myself here. I graduated from high school. I rarely missed school days, well I probably would have liked to, but the wrath of God would hunt me down when my parents heard I didn’t go to school that day.

Anyways, we had almost three whole months of vacation. Plenty of time for relaxing, or should I rephrase that and say helping mom and dad. Let’s see, there was picking up twigs and trimming grass, helping in the garden, helping to can and freeze veggies and tomato soup, baling hay, etc. Oh don’t get me wrong, we had plenty of time to laugh and play and eat lots of summertime foods.

Picnics and campfires, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, vacations for fishing with the entire family. Yes, I have plenty of good memories. Mom and dad were never heard to say, ” The kids school vacations are so short, I don’t know if we can squeeze everything in.”

Another thing that bothers me as an older Senior Citizen is, if school is in session longer, than why so many school drop-outs and why do so many kids not know how to read well on Graduation day?

Well, those are my points, and for today, I am on the kids side, well the kids who aren’t ready to give up bike riding and swimming.

Here are a couple of my grandchildren who started school today. Look at those innocent faces. You can’t help but love them, or at least I can’t!!

  1. I sure do remember that song, and as I read the words I actually sang along. 🙂

I agree that it is too early for the kids to go back to school. Like you, I started the day after Labor Day. We went through to close to the end of June. In Grades 9 and 10, if we did well in the Christmas and Easter exams, we did not have to write finals, and so were out sometime during the first week of June.

    • Wow, the end of June? That seems so late in the year but I do like the part about the exams, and knowing me, I would make sure I passed those in order to not have to write finals!!
