The Man in Her Dream

Monica sat up in bed in a cold sweat. It was 3am and when she looked at the television a set of wiggly lines were running across the screen. Laying beside her was Fluff, her 7 year-old cat.

Looking out of her bedroom door she saw blackness. Everything seemed alright. She wiped the beads of sweat from  her brow thinking she had experienced a terrible nightmare.

She laid back down. She closed her eyes, but her brain was having trouble meeting her wish to go back to sleep. She began to think about what she had to do tomorrow. A long day at work.

Casey’s is where she worked. She did the payroll and this was towards the end-of-month. She had to go back over records and make sure there were no mistakes and no holes. It was going to be a long couple of days.

Her birthday was coming up over the weekend. Her boyfriend and parents had got together and planned a surprise party for her; but Jim, her boyfriend told her about it and ruined the surprise. Monica smiled as she thought about how much she loved him.

She placed her thoughts back to what needed to be done. Sleep, she had to get some sleep. Thoughts settled and she drifted off to sleep. She was woken up once again but not be another dream, but hands that were reaching under her blanket.

She sat up, trying to scream, but nothing came out. Both of her hands started beating the blankets and then her feet took immediate action and began kicking at the dark shadow hovering over her.

The hands sought her legs and gripping with a ferocious tug, she was pulled out from her bed and landed sharply on the floor. Kicking with feet and hands and finding her voice, she screamed, ” let me go, let me go. Please don’t hurt me. What do you want? Let me go”.

He drug her from her bedroom floor out to the living room. Her nightgown being pulled up her skin was being burnt by the carpet. She wanted to cry, but she didn’t want to show defeat so instead, she screamed louder with limbs attacking anywhere pain could be sought.

He pulled her up and thrust her onto the couch. From his back pocket he pulled out some furnace tape and clumsily taped her mouth and bound her hands and feet. Her eyes bulged from fear.

He began to walk to the side of her and she stuck out her legs and he tripped over them. Struggling with all she had she stood up and began to hop towards the front door. She tried desperately to wiggle free from the tape that was holding her hostage around her wrists, but she was unsuccessful.

The intruder was angry by now and he yanked her back from the door with such force she landed in a tail-spin and cracked her head on the corner of a lamp table. From that moment on she spun into darkness.

He picked her up and carried her out her back door to where he had his dingy, dark van with the back doors opened. Tossing her inside he quietly shut the doors. He looked around to see if anyone had heard her screams.

Seeing no shadow of life he quickly went back inside her home and took what ever valuables he could find. Putting them in the bag he pulled out of his jacket he closed the back door and jumped in his van.

He left the neighborhood, breathing a little too fast. The broad had almost ruined his plan. Calming down some and lighting a cigarette, he took a couple of deep puffs. His mind gearing towards the abandoned warehouse.

There he would drop off the goods and collect a handsome pay-out. He glanced towards the back of the van and saw that Monica was still knocked-out. He started to smile as the semi that was coming towards him began blaring its horn.

The van crossed the road and the semi pushed it towards the gully. The van flipped over three times. The intruder hit his head on the steering column and then slammed back towards the head rest before hitting the column once again.

He woke up to a bright flashlight shining into his eyes. Blur of men surrounding him asking questions to see if he was alright. He heard the back door of  his van open and suddenly the trigger of a gun was pointed towards his gut.

Making sure he could stand the officers pulled him out and cuffed him. The sounds of an ambulance neared and soon Monica was laying on a stretcher. The tape was cut off and she woke to a soft, female voice.

” Are you hurt miss? Did he place his hands on you?”

” Uh no, he didn’t rape me. I don’t think he hurt me. My legs and arms feel bruised.”

” We will get you to the hospital now. You can get checked out and after that we will be waiting to question you. I think you are a very lucky lady mam. We have been searching for a guy who fits his description. If it is him, you have helped to capture one of the giants of the sex-traffic ring. Now just relax and we will take it from here.”

Continuing Story Part 29

The next day at school, the dance teacher looked at Dahlia as she entered the door and

noticed that there was something aloof in her eyes. She went over to her and asked her how her weekend went, and Dahlia started to tear up. The teacher took her by the arm and walked her into her small office. Picking up papers and moving them to another spot, she then helped Dahlia to sit down beside her and she said tell me what is happening my best student.

Dahlia explained about the funeral for her mother and about how she never really knew how her parents felt about her until it was too late. The teacher said it is never too late my child, as long as there is breath coming from our lungs, it is never too late. You have your father, and with effort, you can involve him in your life. As far as your mother, yes, it is sad but true, it is too late, but the positive note is you know how she felt about you. The two chatted for a few moments later, and then standing she said to Dahlia that they needed to get to class, as it was about to start. Dahlia rose and the two made their way to the gym.

The teacher clapped her hands together to bring everyone’s attention on her, and all fell silent in the room as people took their places at the bar. Words that Dahlia had not heard before were being spoken in front of all. She heard the teacher say that there were a couple of students that needed some extra coaching, and that Dahlia was going to be her assistant for this week. Dahlia felt her face blush, but inside her heart beamed with pride.

The teacher started the class by telling them what exercises to do, and to work on the steps that were for the end of the school year recital. Once she saw everyone was working, she took two students and Dahlia to one corner of the room and explained to Dahlia what areas these two students needed work on. She asked Dahlia if she had any questions about what needed to be done, and Dahlia nodded now, and told her thank you for the opportunity to be of help. With this the teacher went about her work watching over the other students.

After school was over, she went to Drake’s class and the door was locked. She wondered where he was as this was not a normal thing. She then waited a few minutes to see if he would show up but he did not, so she turned away from the door and left the school. Using her cane, she walked home and entering the front door, she heard a lot of commotion.

Sue walked over to her and explained that she had been told that Drew was sick, that he had collapsed on the floor and Rachel had called the ambulance, and now the workers were here to help Drew. Sue and Dahlia walked to the kitchen to stay out-of-the-way. Although they could not see what was happening, they could tell that this must be a serious thing, if an ambulance was here.

Sue and Dahlia decided to help the other ladies start supper. To stand here and be idle was the devil’s advocate, but all ears were tuned in on the living room.  They had the table set and meat and potatoes were being fried on the stove, when Rachel came in and explained everything was going to be alright. Drew had a black out, which caused him to fall and as he fell he hit the coffee table edge and cracked his forehead open, and the ambulance technicians were in the living right now sewing his head wound shut. He was going to be alright, but tomorrow they would take Drew back to the doctor to have him checked out better.

Everyone in the kitchen breathed a sigh of relief and thanked God out loud for looking out for Drew. Rachel walked back into the living room and went around and straightened up things to keep her hands busy while the techs were finishing up with Drew. Soon they were finished and had her sign some papers, and then she walked them to the door and she watched them leave, and when she could see them no longer, she shut the door and went to Drew, who was now lying on the couch resting comfortably. He had been given an injection for pain and he was quite drowsy by now and he mumbled that he was fine but he wanted to sleep. Rachel covered him up with a blanket and turned the lights off and went towards her bedroom.

Rachel checker herself in the mirror, and then went in to her bathroom and splashed water on her face and combed her hair back into place. She tugged on her dress and got the seams back in place and then she went to the kitchen and joined everyone for dinner. A special prayer was asked for Drew that he had a quick healing and all said Amen in unison, and they began their meal, talking about what had happened at school that day.

Dahlia told about how she was helping the two students in dance class and Ralph told her how proud he was of her. He told her that he could see how good she was and how much improvement there was when he watched her on her balance bar. Dahlia smiled and said thank-you. Drake asked Dahlia if she could stay a few minutes after the kitchen was cleaned up that he wanted to discuss something important with her. Dahlia said that of course she would stay, and one of the ladies snickered kiss kiss, and this broke the tenseness in the room and all started to laugh.

Supper being over and the dishes being done, all left leaving Dahlia and Drake in the room alone. He took her by the hand and led her to the table and helped her to sit and then he pulled a chair up close to her and said that he needed to get something settled, that it had been on  his mind for days, and he could wait no longer for the answer. She said what is it Drake, what is so important that we need to talk about it now with Drew lying in the other room hurt.

Drake asked her if she had any change of mind about marrying him, and she laughed out loud. She asked him what would make him ask such a thing, that of course she loved him and she would never change her mind. Drake smiled and doing so he pushed back his chair a little and getting on bended knee, he pulled a black box out of his pocket, and  opening her hands he placed the box in them. She felt it and asked him what this was, and he said open it, just open it. She felt for the hinge and then opened the box. She touched what was inside and felt sharp edges and also a smooth stone. It was a ring. She looked up into Drake’s face and said this is for me? You bought me a ring? He said this is not any ring, this is an engagement ring. I want the world to know that I love you. I want to scream it to the heavens that you are my girl. I want to announce to everyone that the day after graduation you are going to be my wife. She held out her hand and he slipped the perfect fit diamond ring on her finger. She twisted it with her fingers and could tell that it fit perfectly. She threw her arms around his neck, and crying and kissing him at the same time, she told him  how much she loved him and she could not wait to marry him.

The kiss between the two would make a person melt if they had been peeking. The kiss sealed the yes to the marriage proposal and the wedding date. He kissed her eyes and kissed her tears, and then reached down and kissed her hands and kissed the ring. She leaned herself into him and pushed firmly against him, letting him know that not only did she love him but her body wanted to show him her love also. He held her passionately and tightly and the kiss was so explosive, that fireworks were exploding from the two bodies touching each other.

They finally let each other go and he said let’s go show mom and dad, and anyone else that is willing to look and listen. With this they went into the other room where most were sitting watching Drew sleep and Dahlia walked over to where Rachel was sitting and held her hand out, showing the ring on her finger. Rachel put her hands over her mouth and then wrapped them around Dahlia’s shoulders congratulating her and then hugging her son, she told him she was so happy for the two of them. Before long everyone wanted to see the symbol of love between the two. There were many congratulations going around the room.

Read At Your Own Risk! Reader Beware!

Jack-o-lantern

The jack-o-lantern was lit and laughter from the eyes could be seen bouncing inside its shell. Ghosts were hanging from the trees blowing softly in the winds. Orange and black lights lit the driveway. Treats were over flowing  the bowl. She was ready for the cute little trick-or-treaters.

Each year, this grown woman brought the child out in herself. She got excited and giddy about the holiday, Halloween. She would start shopping the goodwill stores a month before the night of the living dead. She would look for items that matched the night, and then take them home, and when she had enough collected, she would spend a couple of days putting her costume together.

The night did come, and she fed her family, and helped her own kids get ready for their own fun night. Her husband went to the den and read the evening paper and then drifted off to sleep in his easy chair, but not her. The excitement would begin. She would put her newly put together out fit on, and then along with her bowl of treats, she would go outside to sit in her lawn chair awaiting the arrival of her little visitors.

As she was sitting outside, the sun had just set, and the shadows of the trees cast odd shapes against the sky and homes next door to her. There was a light breeze blowing, sending the home-made ghost fly to and fro through the air, making them come to life for anyone walking by. Howling dogs could be heard down the block, and even a stray black cat made its way across her driveway. She was thankful she didn’t have any ladders standing close by, as her non-belief of superstitions also brought her hairs to stand on end on  her arms.

She was gazing out over the neighborhood when she noticed her first bunch of trick-or-treaters. They came up to her door and stood a few feet back from her, not expecting to see a big witch sitting in front of them.

Her voice cried out a scary sound and when you heard the words following them, the kids relaxed and came up closer to her, as she echoed the words of happy Halloween my pretties. The kids started giggling and held out their bags to be filled with candies. Soon all disappeared from her porch and made their way to the next house.

Time went by too quickly as she was entertaining group after group. Word had spread between the kids so most were not startled when they came close to the real witch. By now, most kids had disappeared into their own homes, as the hours of treating were coming to an end.

Then one trick-or-treater walked up to her and said the familiar words and she pulled some last treats from her bowl and started to place them into his bag. This one was a big kid for sure. He must have stood over five feet tall, and his voice was a little raspy. She asked him if he was catching a cold, and he nodded no. She had placed the goodies in his bag and was taking her arm away when he reached out and grabbed it, holding on to it and with raking claws drew blood causing streaks of red to slowly drip down her arm. With his other arm, he reached up and grabbed her around the back of her neck and jerked her quickly up to his face where he bit her nose completely off. She began to gasp as she tried to breathe but the only thing she could do is gasp for air using her lungs.

She started to scream, asking him what he was doing and who he was, and as her words came out he took a bite from her tongue and spit it out on the ground. His eyes drilled into hers and she could feel anger and hatred speaking to her. She tried to fight and escape but her lawn chair kept her in place, and rasping breaths were making her weak. With her good hand left she raked her nails across his mask and yanked it off to see the familiar face of a kid down the street.

This kid was a disturbed kid, who she had at one time watched for his mother. He was suffering from an emotional childhood, and carried his past into his presence. While watching him she had many times laid him down on the couch and told him to rest, so that she could get her wits back while he had spent many moments trying to torture her with his mind. She eventually after exercising every idea she could, had let the mother know that she could no longer take care of him, that she would have to find another sitter.

Tonight he had decided to take back his control over her. He taunted and teased her. He tortured her mind. He used his mechanical claws and continued to draw blood in areas that had once been untouched by blood. After she became so weak she could no longer fight, he drug her by her feet and took her out to the trees.

With him he had brought barn rope and he flung the rope across a nice solid branch and then proceeded to make a noose. He placed her feet in the noose and then wrapped them securely, and then raising the rope, brought her up off the ground, leaving her to hang up side down, and he cackled and snorted, and the soul that was lost, was no found bearing its existence here in her front yard.

He took one more glance at her, making sure she was not slipping to the ground, and then he told her to have a happy Halloween and he raced into the darkness, leaving her to die. Her husband had waken from his after dinner sleep and went through the house looking for his wife, so that he could ask her if she had enjoyed herself on this hallow night. He didn’t see her anywhere, and he kept calling her name but no answer returned.

He opened the front door and gasped as he saw red splashes of blood on the porch. He glanced both ways to see if he could see anyone around, and seeing no movement, he made his way off of the porch and then a glimpse of the flowing ghosts caught his eye and he walked over to where they were hanging from the tree and in between the ghosts  hung his wife.

Her face was white, and he knew she was dead. He quickly ran to the shed and grabbed his cutters and the ladder. He ran back to the tree, almost tripping over one big tree root, but caught himself and made it safely to her. He leaned his head into her chest, and he heard a faint heart beat. She was alive! He quickly set the ladder up and climbed up and began to cut her feet loose. He knew he had to be careful though, or he would cut too far, dropping her on her head, so he cut half way through the noose, and then removed himself from the ladder and following the rope with his eyes, found the end of it, that had been tied to another branch on the tree next to this.

He ran over to it and slowly, using every strength he had, gently let the rope slide up letting her softly be lowered. He finally had her down. He raced over to her screaming at her if she was alright. She could not talk, and then he turned his head away from her and vomited all over the ground, as he observed that there was only half of a tongue.

Her heard her gasping and then noticed in the dark that her nose was gone. He raced into the house and called for an ambulance. He explained briefly what he had discovered with his wife and soon he could hear the screams racing down the road to his house.

Once there they stated she was alive, but barely, they immediately placed oxygen over her mouth, and then covered her face to keep as much dirt off of her face while they transferred her to the hospital.

He picked himself up off the ground and left his ladder and cutters lay where they were. He went inside the house and washed his hands erasing the blood stains from himself. He cursed himself for not being awake, for taking non needed naps after supper. He may have been able to prevent this torture from happening. He got in his car and took off for the hospital, and after he disappeared out of sight, claws reached down and were grabbing the cutters.
