FWF Free Write Friday, Image Prompt

She had seen him at school, the first day she arrived. He was in her first period class, and as each student stood to say their name, she made sure to write his down on her notebook. Brian, saying it out loud, but softly as she went over and over the letters she had written down. She was sitting one row over from him and two seats back.

As she was looking at the teacher while she was speaking, Robin could see his black curly hair. She kept her gaze on him and the teacher. The teacher probably thought that she was the most attentive student in class!

Robin didn’t see him any other time of the day but lunch, and she found him sitting with his buddies at a table. There was no way she was going to try to sit with him, with it being an all guy table. She took her lunch tray and intentionally walked beside the table, brushing her body softly up against his as she walked by, and then stopping and apologizing for bumping into him.

He looked up at her with those big, brown eyes, and his bright whites, smiled at her, and he winked, saying no problem, forget it, and then he went back to talking to his friends. Robin walked over to a table and sat with a couple of girls she knew, but she didn’t really hear anything that was being said, as she was mesmerized by the guy with the pearly whites.

School ended for the day, and she was at her locker getting her books together to take home to study, when he walked by, and just as he was about past her, he stopped and backed up and said, ” Hey, I’m Brian, and you are?” Robin told him her name, and he said hi and then walked on to where he was headed.

He had spoken to her! He had made an effort to stop by and ask her name! She was so excited, she could feel her heart beating out of her chest. She grabbed the rest of what she needed, and slammed the locker door shut and went home.

At home, the house was quiet, and she found a note on the kitchen table from her mom, letting her know she was going to be a little late. Could she go ahead and get the salad prepared and the carrots peeled for supper, plus set the table.

Robin was in such a good mood, that she not only followed her mom’s directions, she started a load of laundry and ran the sweeper in the living room. When her mom arrived home, she made a big deal about what a good kid she was, and gave her a big hug.

Since mom was home, Robin went to her bedroom and pulled out her books and did some studying, every once in a while stopping to think about Brian. Her mom came to her door and tapped on it and said she had a phone call.

Robin put a book marker in her book and got up and went to the living room phone, and after saying hello, she heard the voice, his voice, it was Brian! Her legs quivered and her gut felt warm. She could feel butterflies flying around in her stomach. She heard the other side of the phone saying, game, Friday night, 6p.m., and then there was silence. She heard again, are you there, did you hang up? Robin coughed and said oh yes! I would love to go!

She had a date! She was going out with Brian, this Friday night! Oh my gosh!  She then heard the words, alright see you at the football field by the bleachers Friday, and before she could say anything else, he hung up.

She hung up the phone and practically ran to the kitchen to tell her mom the exciting news. Her mom was busy finishing up with supper, and told her how nice that was, that she was happy for her, and with that, Robin went to her bedroom, and instead of going back to her studies, she climbed on top of her bed, and jumped up and down so high, she felt like she was jumping to heaven.

My Continuing Story Part 6

201202 11 Dance move

The days turned into weeks and Dahlia was receiving top grades in school and she had made a couple of friends, but mainly she spent her time in school, or studying or in the gym.

She loved the gym. She spent many Saturdays in here exercising and working on the dance moves she learned through the class. A few of the girls in her other classes seemed to be forming a Saturday group, as they all met up weekly.  After their practices were over, they would all walk over to the little cafe and have lunch together and this was something Dahlia looked forward to. Laughter and talk, was a nice way to get a break from having your nose in the books.

One Saturday, the girls were all found practicing their dance moves, and then a hard thump was heard. They all turned their heads at the same time to see Dahlia laying on the gym floor. They all went to her at the same time, calling her name and patting her face, asking her if she was alright. It took a few moments, but Dahlia slowly did open her eyes. She seemed a little dazed at first, wondering where she was, but soon it went away and she sat up with help of her classmates. The girls asked her what had happened, had she had breakfast, was she feeling over heated, was she feeling ill?

Dahlia explained that she felt alright, but she had felt a bit dizzy and saw the room spinning and could not hold herself up. The friends decided to call it a day on the practice, and skip the lunch. They all walked Dahlia home and told the teacher what had happened.

The teacher sat and listened to what the girls were explaining, and then stood up and felt Dahlia’s forehead, but it was not warm. She looked in to her eyes but saw nothing out of the ordinary. In the end teacher felt Dahlia had just worked too hard and needed to rest.

The girls all wished her to feel better and then left to go on their way. Dahlia went to her room and lay down on her bed to rest, but soon there was a knock on her door, and upon Dahlia’s words of enter, the teacher brought in a cup of soup and some hot tea.

While Dahlia ate her lunch, teacher talked mindlessly about nothing. At the back of her mind though were wandering thoughts about why Dahlia had passed out. She was going to keep a better eye on her, and see if she saw any symptoms.

After her lunch was finished, teacher took the lunch tray and told Dahlia to rest and left, closing the door behind her. Once again, she lay her head on her pillow and was soon asleep. She slept for most of the afternoon, and the sun coming over her window, woke her up. She went in to her bathroom and checked her hair, placing a few hairs back into their proper place. She then walked into the living room, ,where she found the teacher hanging up the telephone.

She turned to Dahlia and explained that she had just said good-bye to the town doctor, and that she had explained what had happened to her at her practice. The doctor had recommended that if this happened again, that she was to go to the office for a check-up.

Dahlia nodded her head but hoped nothing would happen again. Sunday morning found both ladies sitting on the wooden pews at church. They stood to sing hymns, but Dahlia could not see the words too well, they were blurry, and if it weren’t for the fact that she knew them by heart, she would have been found to having no lips moving while the others were singing.

The teacher took notice of this and after church was over, and they were walking home, she stopped Dahlia and took her by the shoulders, turned her so they were face to face. She told her that they needed to visit the doctor tomorrow. Dahlia gently refused, saying she had school, but the teacher refused her plea, and said as soon as the school day was over, they would go then, and Dahlia agreed.

The two didn’t have any church activities that afternoon, so they continued their walk home, and had a light lunch of finger sandwiches, potato salad, hot tea and cookies for dessert. Each of them spent time that day in their own spaces, attending to what ever needed to be done.

There was a knock at the front door late afternoon, and when it was opened, there stood the doctor. He had been over in this area visiting church members and thought he would drop in. He was welcomed in and they all sat in the living room. The three chatted for a while, and then the doctor asked Dahlia if he could give her a quick examination. He explained that if he became aware of anything, that she could come on in tomorrow for a thorough exam.

The teacher excused herself, and the doctor looked at Dahlia’s eyes, and throat. He listened to her heart. He listened to her lungs, and checked her temperature and pulse. He then went back to examine her eyes once again, and used his small, bright light to look deep in her eyes.

After finishing this quick exam, the doctor asked her if she had been feeling any headaches lately, and she admitted she had a couple here and there, and she pointed to where the head hurt, which was on each side of the temples. She went further to explain, that she studies quite a bit, and she just knew that all of her symptoms were caused from an over load on her eyes, causing the strain and pain.

The doctor nodded, listening to what she had to say, but thought best if she came in to his office tomorrow, for a better examination. He said he had a special room set aside for eyes, and that with the use of a dark room and his technical tools, the two could get a better look. Dahlia agreed to go, as soon as school was over.

Picture And Write It, Part 5

Dahlia and the teacher didn’t do too much over the next couple of days. They spent a lot of time talking and getting to know each other better. Photos were shared between the two of each others families and past childhoods. Sunday, the two ladies went to church, and their was a church picnic following the service, which both attended. This was a great opportunity for Dahlia to get to meet more people in town.

Monday arrived, and Dahlia woke up extra early. She had not slept that well, from excitement, and was found dressed and in the kitchen preparing breakfast for the two of them. She had scrambled some eggs, and fried some sliced potatoes, and had made a batch of biscuits. When the teacher walked through the kitchen area, coffee was lingering in the air.

They both sat, and the teacher asked her if she wanted her to accompany her for her first day, and Dahlia replied no, with some laughter added. I am not a child, you do not have to take me to school, but thank-you. They both laughed over this. The teacher was just as excited for Dahlia as she was herself. After the table and dishes were cleaned, Dahlia gathered her books, said a quick good-bye, and headed out the door to her first day of her future.

There was much chatter in the commons as people were finishing up last-minute details in the office, and others were telling new-found friends good-bye, and they would catch up with each other at lunch, and others were seen bustling to classes. Excitement filled the air for everyone. Dahlia found her class with no problem, and sat herself in the first row, straight in front of the teacher’s desk. She didn’t want to miss any words that were spoken. Different students waved a hello to her as they recognized her from orientation day, and Dahlia waved and smiled back at them.

The teacher walked in and closed the door behind her. She introduced herself to all the students, and pulled out the book that they would be studying. Dahlia pulled her book also, plus a notebook and her pen and pencil. The class was started and finished before Dahlia knew it. Her morning proceeded the same way with each class, and when lunch time arrived, she and some of the other students that were sitting at her table, all talked about the teachers and how good they were, and what they were going to learn.

After lunch, Dahlia found herself in the big gymnasium. This is where a lot of hands on training was going to be taking place. On all four walls, there was no difference. Big, wide mirrors, clung to the walls, and long bars were attached underneath the  mirrors.

Here Dahlia would work and exercise her body. She would learn many steps and she would be returning to this room many times to practice over and over. Before, she knew it, homework was in her bag and she was on her way home. The day had flown by, and Dahlia knew in her heart, that she was going to love going to this school. It had so much to offer and there were so many things to learn.

When she arrived home, the house was quiet. She had her own key, so she let herself in, and fell into the lap of the couch, threw her shoes off, and sat back and rested. The excitement of the day, had caused her to be sleepy, and before she realized it, her eyes drifted slowly shut, and she was found napping when the teacher came through the door. The teacher walked past her softly, as she didn’t want to awaken her. She knew that Dahlia had went through a big day and must be exhausted.

The smell of pork chops drifted through Dahlia’s senses and she woke up and yawned, and stood  up stretched, and made her way into the kitchen to help with supper. The talk between them was mainly about her first day at school, and the teacher smiled as she saw the glow come from her eyes as she talked.

Dahlia got the hand masher and mashed the potatoes, and the teacher placed the meat and boiled corn on each of their plates. After holding hands and saying grace, they both ate with little words being exchanged. After dinner was finished, once again, the dishes were done, and the table was cleared. Dahlia went to her bag and got out her books and homework, and made herself comfortable at the kitchen table to start her homework.

She had been steadily studying, when her head began to ache a little. She stopped reading and rubbed the top of her head and rubbed her neck also. She got up from the table and went over and got a cool drink of water, and then returned to her studies. As she was reading, the words became blurry. She thought to herself, that this must be straining her eyes, and laid the books to the side, decided to take a small break.

She found the teacher outdoors on the porch swing. A basket of fresh flowers was sitting at her feet. Her hands had shades of dark on them from where she had been weeding her flower beds. She patted the seat next to her, motioning for Dahlia to sit down. They sat in silence and swung, taking in the chipper from the birds, and watching the cumulus clouds drift by.

Dahlia broke the silence by telling the teacher of her blurring vision, and the teacher explained what strain could be placed on the eyes from constant studying with no break.

The sun had started to set, and both ladies stood up from the swing, and walked back into the house, the teacher walked towards her own bedroom, and Dahlia walked back to the kitchen, and sat down to take up with her studies once again.
