A True Story About My Friend, the Hero and Angels

I have a beautiful friend named John whom I have been friends with for so many years. He guided me to a story he wanted me to read and with his permission I wanted to share a beautiful story about my friend John, a hero, and angels. Thank-you John for being an inspiration to me.

True Story

IN THE STILL OF THE EVENING THE ONLY sound was the lowing of the cows—and then came the screams. Outside his barn, dairy farmer John . saw a mud-spattered pickup. Behind the wheel was a man who appeared to be stark, raving mad. “I cut my leg off!,” the man was bellowing. “I cut my leg off!” Cautiously approaching the Chevy $-10, watched the frantic driver struggle to raise his left leg into the air. Huber gasped. The leg was a bloody mess—and below the knee it was gone. “Help me!,” the man shouted. “I’m bleeding to death!”

For the stunned xxxx, 43, it was the start of a desperate race to save the life of 37-year-old Donald . But Don, a burly bulldozer operator, had already waged his own herculean struggle for survival. Minutes earlier, alone in the western Pennsylvania woods, he had been forced to amputate part of his own leg with a three-inch pocket knife. It was his only hope of escaping the huge oak tree that had crushed the leg and pinned him to the ground. Leaving a bloody trail, he crawled 135 feet uphill to his bulldozer, hoisted himself into it and rumbled 1,500 feet to his pickup. Then, using a metal file to depress the clutch when he shifted, he drove his manual-transmission truck a mile and a half to John’s place. “I told myself it’s too early to go out like this,” Don told PEOPLE days after his July 20 ordeal. “I thought, I gotta get out of this for my family.’ ”

At the farm, John raced inside to call for help. But when he got back, Don said, “That’s not fast enough.” With remarkable clearheadedness, the hemorrhaging man, who lives with his wife and teenage son 15 miles from John’s. Oliver Township spread, urged the farmer to tell the dispatcher that the pair would meet the rescue squad at a crossroads.

“I never saw a man so sharp under those conditions,” says John, who did the driving. “He kept thinking and planning. Not me. I was praying.” John says his passenger was so levelheaded that he actually asked John to slow down. Explains John: “He didn’t want to die in a car wreck.”

Minutes later, Don calmly told the ambulance crew, “Go get my leg,” then sketched a map that would lead them to the accident site. Wyman lifted himself onto the gurney, declining both oxygen and painkillers.

“He has more stamina than anyone I know on the whole earth,” says xxxxx, “If anyone could have gutted it out like that, it was him.” Don, a steelworker’s son, is more modest. “I guess I just like to do things on my own,” he says. “I’ve always been pretty determined.”

. After finishing his shift clearing trees at the mouth of a strip mine, Don wanted to gather some logs to barter at a local sawmill for lumber for his house. Everyone else was leaving as he sharpened his chain saw. Around 4 p.m. he began slicing into a massive oak lying on a hillside. Then it happened.

Suddenly the trunk snapped back at him and fell, pinning his leg underneath. Because the top of the tree had been wedged between others it was slightly bowed; the cut released the tension like an enormous spring. “As many trees as I’ve cut, I should have known better,” Don says. “It drove me right into the ground. I didn’t, know what had hit me.” Seconds later, he knew. The trunk had rolled over his left shin about seven inches below” the knee, cutting flesh, shattering bone and burying his lower leg under an immovable weight of oak.

For the next hour, Don dug feverishly to free his broken leg; every so often he stopped “to bellow for help.” Unable to reach much of the log with his saw, he used it instead to chop the hard ground beneath his leg, then scooped the soil away with his hands. “I felt some fear, but not too much,” he says. “Mostly I just tried to assess the situation and not panic.”

But then Don ran into a huge rock—one he couldn’t dig around to free his foot. He weighed his odds of rescue—it would be several hours before his wife started to worry about him and, by then, he might bleed to death. “I had my knife,” Don recalls. “I just realized that if I was gonna get outta here, this [amputation] might be the only way.”

First, Don grabbed a rock to sharpen the dull blade of the $3 flea-market knife. Next he sliced away his jeans. Then he pulled the starter cord out of his chain saw and made a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding.

After a first quick cut, Don, who remembers fainting at the sight of blood in a high school biology class, thought, “I can’t do this. I’m not gonna be able to cut my leg off because of the pain.” So he sat there for three or four minutes, realizing it was his only choice. Reliving the ordeal, Don has increasing difficulty getting out the words. Finally he pauses, squeezing his wife’s hand for support.

“I was praying,” he says. “When I got ready to cut, I said, ‘God, help me to get out of here’—and He did. But once I started culling, I didn’t pray—I was so concentrated on that.” After a minute of agony as he cut through the splintered bone, Don felt a surge of joy. “My leg was free now!” he says. “At that moment, I thought I was starting down the road to being saved.”

Thanks largely to his own courageous efforts, Don made it. But the rest of his leg didn’t. Although the rescue crew easily found the limb—still wrapped in blue jeans and wearing a laced-up, steel-toed boot—by the time they were able to saw it free and rush it to the hospital, more than two hours held elapsed and tissue damage was too severe for reattachment. But despite his sacrifice, many are convinced that Don made the right choice. “If he wanted to live, he had to gel out of there,” says assistant fire chief xxxx. “And that was his only way out.”

The warmest praise for Don
comes from his family. ‘I think he’s the greatest man alive, that he could do something like this,” says Brian, a high school senior who hopes to become a lawyer. “Don would do anything for us,” adds Janet. “He did what he did because he knew he was coming back to his family.”

After less than a week in the hospital, Don was ready to go home. It will be a while before he’ll be back bass fishing or tracking deer—or at work, which Original Fuels has promised he’ll have for life. But according to his physical therapist, Don can expect eventually to regain up to 95 percent of his leg function with an artificial limb.

Looking back now at his narrow escape, Don says simply, “I had a life-and-death situation. I have so much to live for that I did the only thing I could—I chose life.”

Special Memories?

I was sitting here thinking of Al and remembering back to the times when he saw people. How lucky was he that he was able to see our parents and Jesus. Our mom passed away in 2000 and dad passed in 2007.

For those of us who have lost loved ones I suppose you and I are no different.  Our hearts bleed and yet our love runs deep. Only the circumstances are. Al passed away from a terrible and rude illness called MSA. This stands for Multiple System Atrophy.

It is a killer of an illness in more ways than just taking a loved one from us; but on the other side of the coin, beautiful things and multiple blessings can be found if only we become aware of the precious moments.

At my weakest moments as I would sit or stand beside Al holding his hand and tears running quietly down my cheeks, Al would whisper in that soft voice, “Do you see him?” I would look around, the tears would stop in fear he may notice them. Then Al would say, ” There, right beside you is Jesus.” What a beautiful thing to behold.

A gift for those getting ready to cross over from this earth to the heavenly hands of God. I can think of no gift here on earth that could rise above this one. For Al to see mom and dad is something I wish so many times that I could do, but alas, I must wait my turn for my life to be almost over.

I can not be jealous of something so cherished by Al. I can only be happy for him that he is united once again with our family. I have been able to start smiling a little as I remember those special times Al and I shared together. The tears still fall, but time is on my side and with God’s hand I am making it through each day.

Have any of you who have lost a special person in your life, like to share with me a special story that you remember while sitting with the one you loved? If so, I would love to read and be able to comment on it.

I am not trying to bring back sadness. I am trying to bring forth joyful times and smiles from your memories. We are close enough friends that it would be an honor for you to share with me some special memory that you hold dear to your heart.beauty 2

A Strange Day With Al

clouds

It has been a day. A day of Al going from not being able to move to Al being able to sit up a third of the way. He called the bath people some really nasty names this morning. He wants to get up and leave. He asked for cheeseburgers. He asked for chicken. He asked for his keys. He wanted to get up and get dressed.

He has not slept all day. Part of the time his eyes were bright and big. Other times he was staring off into space. Sometimes I think he was talking to me and other times I am sure I was not in his conversations.

He was able to use one of his arms for about a half an hour. He was able to not only lift  his head but actually move it to the side. This is something I have not seen for months. This entire scene actually shocked and kind of spooked me a little.

After about a half an hour he stopped and went back to being the Al I recognize these days. But the words, take me home God, I am ready to go home have been chanted non-stop from afternoon and even now as I write.

He told me Jesus is in his room. He said that Jesus was a short man with brown hair. He said that Jesus has carpenter clothes on. He said Jesus was standing right beside me.

I don’t know what is going on. I don’t know what to think. How was Al able to lift off of his bed and move his head?  I am just dumb founded and almost speechless.

Ever have an experience that felt surreal, as though you’d been suddenly transported into the twilight zone, where time seemed to warp, perhaps slowing down or speeding up? Tell us all about it. If you haven’t had an experience in real life that you can draw from, write a fictional account of a surreal experience.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us SURREAL.

I have not had a real experience, so this is partially  fabricated for Daily Prompt.

It is a Saturday evening. The day has been quiet. Al has slept 90% of the day. He did eat a small breakfast of baby cereal mixed with applesauce. For lunch he had sweet potatoes and I pureed a banana and some apple juice. He ate most of the main dish but had no room for the dessert.

I cleaned the house and did a little bit of rearranging. I tend to do this when there is no one to speak to. I checked on Al frequently along with repositioning him often. He is trying very hard to speak today, but his voice is but a low whisper.

Supper time came and I went in to offer him a bite to eat, but he refused. I immediately checked his temperature. It was hovering at about 96 degrees. His skin felt cool but not clammy. He looked at me with some prompting and still refused to eat.

This is alright. I don’t want to force him to eat. He will eat when he is hungry. As a last resort a half an hour later I offered him some of his favorite ice-cream, and he refused. Now I knew things were not right.

Al has put me through a few moments the past several days. I find myself wondering if he will be here in the morning, but when I get up, I am able to say a big good morning to eyes that greet me as I walk in.

I made sure he was still comfortable and not cold  and then went and poured myself a cup of coffee. I sat down here to the computer where I had spent a great deal of time tinkering with my sound on my computer.

I had plugged in my headphones a few days ago and ever since then I have not been able to hear sound coming from the speakers. I have tested and rechecked until my eyeballs started spinning.Spinning_eyeball_transparent

I went back in to check on Al again and he was trying to tell me something. I leaned down as close as I could get and I figured out he was telling me, ” I feel sick all over.”

I told him I sure wish I could do something for him and that he didn’t need to eat unless he wanted to. I put Dukes of Hazard on for him and came back out to my cold coffee.

The only lights on in the house were my computer light and Al’s TV. I decided to play a game and was half-way  through the first one when I saw sparks coming from Al’s room. It was like lightning  shooting from everywhere.Animated_Lightning_Strike_by_geans123

The hairs stood up on my arms and my body froze in my seat. I stared at it and somehow I forced myself to get up and walk cautiously to his room.

When I peeked in I saw the most magnificent view I suspect I will ever see in my life.

There were several angels .angels1 They were in mid-air and they were surrounding Al.Al

At the head of the bed stood Jesus. Jesus 3He was lifting Al right out of his bed. He held Al close to him and I looked at my brother and held out my arms to him.

It was as if Al didn’t even see me. His eyes rested upon his heavenly Father. The lights grew bright in his room and the lightening show stopped.

I watched as Jesus lifted him up and over our home. Al was being freed of MSA. The terrible pain that he had been fighting for so many years was now over.

I wept into my hands. Tears of sorrow and tears of happiness that Al was once again going to be smiling. The only thing I ever wished for him was smiles and now as I looked up into the skies, I could see Jesus opening the gates and then the two of them disappeared.

jesus at the gate 2I fell to the floor and praised Jesus for healing the brother I loved so dear. After minutes passed, I stood up and gazed around the room.

Stillness hit me. Silence filled every crack. I walked slowly around his room picking up one car at a time.

Tears rolled down my eyes as I knew there would always be a special bond between Al’s collection of cars and me.

I would treasure them for the rest of my days. I picked up his favorite Coca Cola pieces and cuddled them to my chest. Slowly I walked to the door and before I closed it behind me I turned back one more time and looked up to the heavens. I whispered to my brother, I love you bud. I will always love you. You filled my heart with wonderful memories. You taught me patience and understanding. You gave me wonderful memories. Take good care of him God. Al promised to save me a spot. Watch over him angels, until I find myself standing next to him.

My Little Angel

My Little Angel

Tip toe down the stairs, she stops. She looks and she listens. Tears start to form and drip softly down her cheeks. Her finger goes in her mouth. She says nothing. Too scared to move.

She hears a groan coming from the floor. This forces her little feet to take a new step. Step by step she makes it down to solid floor. Cautiously, tenderly, she moves closer to where the sound was coming from.

She…
